Description
Difficulty Level
Beginner-friendly. Dorymyrmex insanus is hardy and forgiving of small care mistakes. They thrive in simple, dry setups and adapt well to captive conditions, making them a good choice for a first ant colony as long as basic temperature and feeding needs are met.
Temperament
Crazy Pyramid Ants are very active but not overly aggressive. Workers move quickly and can appear “nervous” or “jittery,” but they generally remain focused on foraging and are not defensive toward the keeper during normal maintenance. They do not have a true sting, but like most ants, they can bite if disturbed.
Feeding
In the wild, D. insanus workers feed on small insects, carrion, and sugary plant secretions. In captivity, they thrive on a simple, consistent feeding routine that combines sugars and protein:
- Sugars / Carbohydrates:
Sunburst Ant Nectar (recommended for stability, safety, and ease of use),
hummingbird nectar (store-bought, non-red, properly diluted), or very small amounts of raw honey. - Protein (2–3× per week): Small feeder insects or chopped insect pieces (fruit flies, mealworms, micro crickets, roach bits, etc.).
Regular access to both nectar and protein supports healthy brood development and steady colony growth. Remove uneaten protein before it molds.
Temperature
D. insanus is adapted to warm climates and does best with a controlled source of heat:
- Ideal nest temperature: 80–90°F (27–32°C).
- Use a heat cable applied along one side or beneath part of the nest to create a gentle temperature gradient.
- Allow only part of the setup to be heated so the ants can choose their preferred temperature and move brood into the warmest area.
- Avoid placing the entire nest directly on a solid heat mat, which can cause overheating or uneven moisture levels.
Providing a warm zone is especially important for brood development in this species.
Humidity
These ants prefer low to moderate humidity, similar to their natural desert environment.
- Keep nest conditions mostly dry, with only a lightly hydrated chamber if your setup provides one.
- Avoid heavy misting or saturated substrate, which can encourage mold and stress the colony.
- Always provide a clean water source (such as a test tube reservoir or water feeder).
Preventing Escapes
Although fast-moving, D. insanus is not a strong climber on smooth surfaces and is relatively easy to contain with basic precautions:
- Use a smooth-walled outworld with a secure, well-ventilated lid.
- Apply a thin layer of fluon around the upper interior rim of the outworld.
- Avoid decorations, tubing, or structures that reach too close to the lid and could form bridges.
